Full Thickness Skin Graft to nose Procedure
Full-thickness skin graft to the nose (FTSG) is a surgical procedure to correct a nasal defect through reconstruction. There are a few reasons why patients may consider getting a skin graft, including burns, infection, cancer, or skin loss due to tumor removal. This procedure aims to take healthy skin from another region of the body and transplant it onto the defective area of the nose. This fairly common, straightforward procedure offers an excellent solution for patients seeking treatment for a defect on the nose.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Patients may consider a full-thickness skin graft to the nose in cases with extensive damage or loss of tissue. This can be due to tumor removal, burns, infection, or skin loss. Full-thickness skin grafts are preferred for the nose because they provide a more natural appearance and have a higher chance of successful integration with the surrounding tissues. Additionally, they can help to restore the nasal contour and support structures, leading to improved aesthetics and functionality.
What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will excise a graft by removing a small section of all layers of the skin from the inner upper arm, neck, or behind the ear. The surgeon will then excise the defective area on the nose and replace it with the skin graft. Once the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
After the procedure, patients will have wounds at the nose and the donor site. Patients should leave dressings on their wounds for approximately a week. It is important for patients to monitor the site and ensure to avoid getting it wet, stretching the skin, and rubbing it. Any discomfort is typically manageable through a course of anti-inflammatory pain medications. In the event patients experience any irregular symptoms, they should promptly report it to their surgeon to find a solution.
