Septoplasty - Turbinate Resection with Tonsillectomy Procedure
Septoplasty, turbinate resection, and tonsillectomy are three ENT procedures that are performed to address common issues in the nose and throat. A septoplasty is a nasal procedure that involves straightening a deviated septum to improve airflow. Turbinate resection aims to reduce the size of swollen turbinates. Lastly, a tonsillectomy involves the surgical removal of the tonsils due to recurrent infections, sleep apnea, or other issues. These procedures are often performed in conjunction with one another if the patient suffers from these three conditions and would benefit from all three.
When is this Procedure Necessary?
Patients may consider a septoplasty, turbinate resection, and tonsillectomy procedure if they suffer from various conditions relating to the throat and nose. Oftentimes, patients who suffer from one ENT condition also have another that is preventing them from comfortably breathing through their nose or mouth. This joint procedure offers a solution to many conditions, and having them completed simultaneously offers the benefit of only having to undergo a single procedure. Patients may consider this procedure if they have the following conditions:
- Chronic sinusitis
- Sleep apnea
- Breathing problems
- Swollen turbinates
- Deviated septum
Preparing for Your Procedure
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will access the turbinates to remove excess tissue and straighten the septum to improve airflow and alleviate congestion. Next, the surgeon will access the patient’s tonsils through the mouth and then use specialized instruments to extract them. When the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close any incisions and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
After this procedure, patients may experience swelling and discomfort in the throat and nose. Patients are typically given anti-inflammatory pain medications to manage any pain. Patients should avoid strenuous activities and should stick to a soft diet to avoid irritating the throat. Any irregular or concerning symptoms should be reported to the doctor.
