Sinus /Turbinates Bilateral (Complex) Procedure

Bilateral turbinate reduction is a surgical procedure recommended for patients suffering from chronic sinusitis, which is a condition that manifests recurring sinus infections. The goal of this procedure is to make an incision to access and remove some tissue from the turbinates to open the airways and make breathing easier for patients. Oftentimes, patients with chronic sinusitis also suffer from interrupted sleep, difficulting breathing, and nose bleeds. Reducing the size of the turbinates often provides a solution for all of these issues.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A bilateral nasal turbinate reduction using a complex approach is considered medically necessary if a patient displays symptoms relating to chronic sinusitis, including difficulty breathing, snoring, and recurring sinus infections. Initially, patients with this condition are recommended to try nasal spray and antibiotics before they explore surgical options. A complex approach is necessary if the doctor cannot access the turbinates through the nasal passages.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision to access the turbinates. The surgeon will use specialized tools to remove the excess tissue to open the airways and improve airflow. This procedure is repeated on both sides of the nose. Once the goal of the procedure is achieved, the surgeon will close the incisions and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients may experience pain in the nose due to the incision and turbinate reduction process. Oftentimes, surgeons will prescribe anti-inflammatory pain medications to help patients manage the discomfort. If patients experience any abnormal symptoms, they should let their doctor know.
