Sinus /Turbinates Unilateral (Complex) Procedure
Unilateral turbinate reduction (complex) is a surgical procedure to correct enlarged nasal turbinates on a singular side. Patients with enlarged turbinates may experience symptoms including difficulty breathing, snoring, and recurring sinus infections. A complex approach is necessary if a simple approach through the nose is not an option due to a structure or another problem. After this procedure, patients can expect to breathe more easily, experience reduced infections, and sleep more comfortably.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Complex unilateral turbinate reduction is considered medically necessary for patients who suffer from recurring sinus infections (chronic sinusitis) or nasal obstruction due to enlarged turbinates on one side. A complex approach is utilized if it is too tight to access the turbinates through the nose. When patients present symptoms of chronic sinusitis, their doctor will typically begin by prescribing nasal sprays or medications to fight off infection. However, if patients continue to experience severe symptoms after trying different conservative treatments, they may begin to consider surgical intervention.
What To Expect
Patients will be under local or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. During a complex approach, the surgeon will make an incision to access the turbinates. The surgeon will use specialized tools to remove excess tissue to open the airways and improve airflow. Once the goal of the procedure is achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from anesthesia.
After the procedure, patients may experience pain in the nose due to the incision and turbinate reduction process. Oftentimes, surgeons will prescribe anti-inflammatory pain medications to help patients manage the discomfort. If patients experience any abnormal symptoms, they should let their doctor know.
