Inguinal hernia repair is a surgical procedure that involves pushing the bulge back into place and strengthening the abdominal wall using a mesh. An inguinal hernia occurs in the inguinal canal located in the groin area. This type of hernia occurs when a portion of the intestines or abdominal tissue protrudes through the weakened muscle wall, resulting in a visible bulge. Inguinal hernia repair is sometimes recommended for patients who have an inguinal hernia that has not responded to conservative treatments.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Inguinal hernia repair may become medically necessary if the patient begins experiencing uncomfortable symptoms as a result. Symptoms of an inguinal hernia include a visible bulge in the groin area, pain or discomfort in the groin or abdomen, and a dragging sensation. If left untreated, inguinal hernias can lead to serious complications such as incarceration (where abdominal contents become trapped within the abdominal wall) or strangulation (where blood flow to the affected area is compromised). If a patient experiences these symptoms, they are likely a candidate for inguinal hernia repair surgery.

What To Expect

Patients will be under local or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision near the groin area to access the hernia sac that contains the protruding tissue. To prevent recurrence, a mesh may be used to reinforce the weakened abdominal wall. This mesh acts as a barrier to support and strengthen the tissues surrounding the hernia site. Once the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they wake up from the anesthesia. 

After the procedure, patients may experience swelling, pain, and bruising in the days following. It is important to follow post-operative care instructions provided by healthcare professionals, including taking prescribed pain medication as needed and avoiding strenuous activities for some time.
