Excision plantar granuloma Procedure
Excision plantar granuloma is a surgical procedure to remove a granuloma from the sole of the foot. A granuloma is a noncancerous cluster of white blood cells that form in response to inflammation, irritation, or an unfamiliar object. Granulomas can go away on their own with time, but they are known to randomly come back. Therefore, excision may become necessary to permanently remove the growth and prevent it from returning. Granulomas can be especially inconvenient when located on the sole of the foot, as they can make it uncomfortable to walk.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
When left untreated, plantar granulomas can cause significant discomfort for the patient during everyday activities. Surgical excision of the granuloma may be recommended by healthcare professionals in situations where the lesion is large, deep-seated, causing severe pain, or has not responded to non-invasive treatments. Although conservative methods can sometimes help reduce the size of a granuloma, complete excision is the only way to prevent it from returning.
What To Expect
After the procedure, the patient may experience discomfort which is manageable through a course of prescribed pain medications. If the area is displaying any concerning symptoms such as swelling or inflammation, the patient should promptly let their doctor know.
