Complex Fracture (Includes Rodding Humerus / Tibia / Femur) Procedure
Complex fracture repair is a surgical procedure to restore function and stability to the affected bone. This procedure involves open reduction and internal fixation, as well as the use of a metal rod to secure the fractured bone fragments in place. At Smith Medical, we include the price of the rod in the procedure to ensure patients are not met with any unexpected fees.
Smith Medical Direct Specialty Care is a modern surgery center offering cash-pay procedures. Leave hidden fees and insurance-related complications in the past and enjoy the benefits of transparent and affordable surgical care with the Smith team.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Complex fracture repair for the femur, tibia, or humerus may be considered medically necessary in cases where conservative methods such as casting or splinting cannot stabilize the bone and promote proper healing. This surgery is recommended when the fracture is severe, displaced, or involves multiple fractures that will not heal properly without surgical intervention.
Factors that may indicate the need for complex fracture repair:
- Fractures with exposed bone
- Fractures that have damaged surrounding blood vessels or nerves
- Fractures that have caused significant joint instability
What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. During surgery, the orthopedic surgeon carefully aligns the fractured ends of the bone before inserting a rod into the medullary canal through a small incision. This rod acts as an internal splint, allowing for better alignment and supporting early weight-bearing activities. When the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
After the procedure, patients will likely experience some pain and discomfort in the region of the incision. This is manageable through a course of anti-inflammatory pain medications. Physical therapy is an essential component of the recovery process, as it helps restore strength and range of motion in the affected limb.
