Laparoscopic Vaginal Hysterectomy with Bladder Sling Procedure
Laparoscopic hysterectomy with bladder sling is a surgical procedure used to remove the uterus through the vagina. During a laparoscopic approach, the surgeon will make small incisions in the abdomen to insert the laparoscope. This tool helps the surgeon view the organs and perform the procedure without requiring a large incision.

When is This Procedure Necessary?
There are a few reasons why patients may choose to undergo a laparoscopic hysterectomy with a bladder sling. This procedure is considered medically necessary in a few circumstances including:
- Uterine fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
A bladder swing is an additional step in the procedure that is recommended for patients suffering from urinary incontinence or bladder leaks.
What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make small incisions in the abdominal region to view the area using a laparoscope throughout the length of the procedure. The surgeon will carefully disconnect the uterus from the supporting ligaments and then remove it through the vagina. Next, the surgeon will begin the bladder sling portion of the procedure. A mesh sling is placed under the urethra or bladder which provides additional support and prevents leaks. When the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close any incisions and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
Following a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy and bladder sling procedure, patients may experience some discomfort and bloating which is manageable with pain medications. Patients must follow their surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully, including proper wound care and avoidance of heavy lifting or strenuous activity. Patients can typically return to normal activity within 2-3 weeks after surgery.
