Rectocele Repair Procedure
Rectocele repair is a surgical procedure that treats a bulge caused by the rectum pushing into the vagina, known as a rectocele. This may occur if the rectovaginal septal tissue loses integrity and can no longer support the rectum. This may occur for a few reasons, including childbirth, age, and obesity.
Smith Medical is a direct specialty care provider offering advanced treatment to patients with various medical concerns. We offer affordable surgery using a cash-pay process to serve uninsured patients, those with high deductibles, and those seeking more personalized care.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Rectocele repair is considered medically necessary in cases where a patient experiences symptoms that severely inhibit their quality of life. This includes the following symptoms:
- Difficulty with bowel movements
- Constipation
- Pelvic pressure or fullness
- Discomfort during intercourse
If you experience any of these symptoms, you may consider rectocele repair. Continue reading to learn about the full treatment process associated with this procedure.
What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision in the vaginal wall and then reposition the rectum into its normal position. Oftentimes, the surgeon will tighten or reinforce the weak pelvic floor muscles to provide long-term support. Once the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close any incisions and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
Patients may experience discomfort in the days following the procedure. This is manageable through a course of anti-inflammatory pain medications. Patients should plan for their recovery to last a couple weeks in which time they should avoid strenuous or sexual activity. Eventually, patients will engage in physical therapy to strengthen their pelvic floor.
