Ulnar Nerve Transposition / Epicondylectomy Procedure

Ulnar nerve transposition, also known as epicondylectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to alleviate symptoms caused by compression or entrapment of the ulnar nerve. The ulnar nerve is responsible for movement and sensation in the forearm and hand, and when compressed at the elbow, it can result in pain, numbness, and muscle weakness. During this procedure, the surgeon relocates the ulnar nerve from its original position behind the medial epicondyle to a new location in front of it. By performing this transposition, pressure on the nerve is reduced, minimizing symptoms and promoting better function.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Ulnar nerve transposition is medically necessary if conservative treatment options have failed to provide ample relief. The most common indications for ulnar nerve transposition include persistent pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and loss of hand coordination that impact daily activities. These symptoms often result from impingement or pressure on the ulnar nerve due to conditions like cubital tunnel syndrome or compressed nerves near areas where the nerve passes through tight spaces. By repositioning the ulnar nerve away from areas causing obstruction or irritation, transposition surgery aims to relieve symptoms and restore normal function of the hand and forearm.

What To Expect

The procedure begins with an incision made over the inner side of the elbow to gain access to the ulnar nerve. Once identified, the surgeon carefully detaches the nerve from any surrounding tissues and evaluates its condition. Next, a tunnel or groove is created in front of the medial epicondyle, through which the ulnar nerve is relocated and positioned securely. This relocation aims to alleviate pressure on the nerve by preventing it from becoming compressed or irritated during everyday movements. After ensuring proper positioning, the surgeon closes the incision using sutures or staples and administers appropriate post-operative care instructions to facilitate smooth recovery and minimize complications.
