Epididymectomy - Total Procedure
Total epididymectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the epididymis, a tube that holds sperm located in the back of each testicle. A patient would consider undergoing this procedure for a few reasons, including an injury to the groin, infection, or a growth or tumor. This procedure is most commonly used to treat a condition called chronic epididymis, which refers to inflammatory pain that lasts for a prolonged period of time.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
This procedure is typically indicated for patients suffering from chronic epididymitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and swelling of the epididymis. Chronic epididymitis can lead to recurring pain and discomfort in the scrotum, as well as potential complications such as abscess formation or infertility. If conservative treatments such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications are not effective, patients may consider surgical intervention.
What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision into the scrotum to access the epididymis. The surgeon will then remove the entire epididymis. Once the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision, and the patient is monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
Following the procedure, patients may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the genital area. Individuals need to rest as much as possible in the days immediately following surgery and avoid any strenuous activity or heavy lifting. Pain medication prescribed by the surgeon should be taken as directed to manage post-operative pain effectively. Patients should report any irregular symptoms to their doctor.
