Hemorrhoidectomy and Umbilical Hernia Repair Procedure

Hemorrhoidectomy and umbilical hernia repair are two surgical procedures often performed in conjunction. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectum or anus that can cause pain, bleeding, itching, and even difficulty with bowel movements. Umbilical hernias occur when part of the intestine protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles near the navel, causing pain and possible strangulation of the bowel. This procedure offers a solution to patients suffering from both conditions.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A Hemorrhoidectomy is typically recommended when conservative treatments for hemorrhoids, such as dietary changes, over-the-counter medications, and lifestyle modifications, have failed to provide relief from symptoms such as severe pain, bleeding, and prolapse. Similarly, an Umbilical Hernia Repair is medically necessary when a hernia at the umbilicus becomes strangulated, causing severe pain and potentially cutting off blood flow to the surrounding tissue. In this situation, emergency surgery is required to prevent further complications.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. For the hemorrhoidectomy portion of the procedure, the surgeon will make incisions around the affected area and carefully excise the hemorrhoids using specialized surgical tools. During the umbilical hernia surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision near the umbilicus and gently pushes the protruding tissue or organ back into place. A mesh may be used to reinforce the abdominal wall and prevent future hernias from occurring. When the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close the incisions and the patient will be monitored as they wake up from the anesthesia.

Following the procedure, patients may experience discomfort, swelling, and pain in the surgical area. It is common to have limitations in daily activities such as lifting heavy objects or engaging in strenuous physical activities during the initial weeks following surgery. Pain medication may be prescribed to manage any discomfort experienced during this time. Additionally, maintaining proper wound care and hygiene practices are essential to prevent infection and promote healing. Patients should report any irregular or concerning symptoms to their doctor as soon as possible.
