Interstim Trial Procedure

InterStim therapy is a medically implanted device that can help individuals who suffer from an overactive bladder and/or bowels. InterStim therapy works by delivering mild electrical pulses to the sacral nerves near the tailbone which initiates communication between the brain and the bowels and bladder. This therapy is known to effectively manage symptoms in individuals who experience a diminished quality of life due to a lack of bladder or bowel control. Before committing to an implanted device, patients will typically undergo a trial period to see if it is effective for their unique condition.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Medical professionals may recommend that patients consider an InterStim trial if they have an overactive bladder or bowels and their symptoms do not improve after conservative therapies. Oftentimes, doctors will initially encourage patients to consider lifestyle changes or specific therapies such as bladder training and pelvic floor exercises. Sometimes, medications can also help patients increase urine retention. If these conservative therapies are ineffective, the doctor may recommend that the patient consider an InterStim trial.

What To Expect

During this procedure, patients may be under local anesthesia to ensure their comfort. The doctor will place thin wires through the skin without the need for incisions. The leads are then plugged into a stimulator that can be attached to clothing. The trial period will typically last around a week and patients should keep note of how they feel and how it affects their symptoms.

After the trial period concludes, patients will work with their doctor to discuss the patient’s experience. If the patient experienced significant improvements in their condition during the trial period, they may be considered a good candidate for receiving a permanent InterStim device. The healthcare provider will discuss with the patient the potential benefits and risks of undergoing this surgical procedure. Before implanting the permanent device, additional tests may be conducted to ensure that it is a suitable long-term solution for the patient’s condition.
