When is This Procedure Necessary?

Before this procedure, doctors will typically recommend that patients explore medication and lifestyle changes, but if these treatments are ineffective, lithotripsy is often the next step. Additionally, patients with a history of recurrent kidney stones or those at risk for complications due to the size or location of the stone may also benefit from lithotripsy.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia throughout the procedure to ensure their comfort. The doctor will either use high-energy shock waves or a laser for this procedure, and it will differ depending on the approach. The laser approach breaks up the kidney stones from the inside whereas the shock wave approach breaks them up from the outside. During lithotripsy on both sides, the doctor will target both kidneys simultaneously. Before your procedure, you will consult your doctor to determine the best approach for you. 

Following the procedure, patients typically experience mild discomfort and soreness in the treated area, which can last for a few days. Recovery time from lithotripsy varies depending on the size and location of the kidney stones, as well as the overall health of the patient. Patients need to drink plenty of fluids to help flush out any remaining stone fragments and prevent new ones from forming.
