Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Device

A bone-anchored hearing device (BAHD) is a sophisticated medical device that utilizes the principle of bone conduction to improve hearing in individuals who have conductive or mixed hearing loss. The BAHD consists of an implant that is inserted behind the ear and anchored onto the skull bone and a sound processor that sits on the skin just behind the ear.

About Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Device Procedure

The device works by transmitting sound waves through the skull bone directly to the inner ear, bypassing any damage or malformation within the outer or middle ear. BAHDs are particularly useful for patients who have chronic infections, congenital abnormalities, surgical defects, or trauma affecting their outer or middle ears. Recent advancements in BAHD technology have enabled wireless connectivity with smartphones and easy adaptability to different listening environments, making them an effective and versatile solution for many types of hearing loss.

When is this Procedures Necessary?

Bone-anchored hearing aids are an excellent option for many patients who struggle with different aspects of their hearing. Depending on the severity of your hearing impairment, another hearing aid may offer a better solution for your condition.

Your doctor may recommend a bone-anchored hearing aid if:

  • You have conductive or mixed hearing loss
  • You have a chronic infection in the ear canal
  • You have a narrow ear canal
  • You have otitis media

If you have an infection, your doctor will treat this first. After you are approved for a BAHD, you will be able to move forward with the procedure process.

    Preparing for Your Procedure

During this procedure, your doctor will place a small implant into the mastoid bone behind your ear. The removable microphone and sound processor can be clipped onto the abutment of the implant. This will allow patients to manage their implants and remove the device when necessary. Since this is performed on an outpatient basis, patients can return to normal activity days after their procedure.

The surgery will typically take around 45 minutes to an hour. Patients may experience light pain in the days following surgery but this should subside within a week. Your doctor may prescribe pain medications to manage your postoperative pain. It is very important that patients closely follow instructions on how to manage their device to ensure it is working correctly.
