Mastoidectomy Procedure

Mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove mastoid air cells from the area behind the ear. The mastoid bone is part of the skull located directly behind the ear. If the mastoid air cells become diseased, it can cause an infection. This procedure involves the removal of harmful cells from the mastoid bone, ultimately preventing the infection from spreading. A mastoidectomy procedure is most commonly recommended to patients who have an ear infection, or otitis media, that has spread to the skull.

This surgery is not as common as it once was. Now, many patients with mastoiditis can find relief from antibiotics to kill the diseased mastoid air cells. However, a mastoidectomy may be necessary in cases where the antibiotics as ineffective. This surgical procedure comes with some risks, so it is important to consider different alternatives before making a decision.

When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?

Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.

A mastoidectomy is necessary if:

  • The patient has chronic mastoiditis
  • The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
  • The infection is spreading

Preparing for Your Procedure

During a mastoidectomy, a patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort. For a simple mastoidectomy, the surgeon will make a small incision behind the ear to access the mastoid bone. Next, they will use small instruments to carefully open the mastoid bone. They will then be able to remove the infected mastoid air cells from the bone and close the incision. This procedure typically takes approximately 2-3 hours.

After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort at the incision site as well as headaches. These symptoms should go away within a few days after the surgical procedure. Patients will be given antibiotics and pain medication to ensure a healthy and comfortable mastoidectomy recovery. Your surgeon will likely organize a follow-up appointment to ensure the procedure’s success.
