Ossiculoplasty Procedure

An ossiculoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves repairing the damaged sound-transmitting mechanism. This mechanism is formed by three bones medically referred to as ossicles. The ossicles assist with the transfer of sound and can be found in the middle ear. When these structures are damaged, they can impair an individual’s hearing and can eventually lead to conductive hearing loss.

During an ossiculoplasty, the surgeon will reconstruct the ossicles using artificial bones. Depending on the patient’s condition and the surgeon they visit, the artificial bone material may differ. When deciding if an ossiculoplasty is right for you, it is important to consult with your doctor.

When Is An Osssiculoplasty Necessary?

An ossiculoplasty procedure may become necessary when the ossicles are damaged as a result of trauma, infection, or congenital malformation. These three ossicles are often referred to as the ossicular chain because they connect the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. When this connection is disturbed, it can prevent auditory transduction, ultimately hindering an individual’s ability to hear.

Patients may consider undergoing this procedure if they experience hearing loss as a result of damage to the ossicles. It is important to understand that not every patient suffering from hearing loss can benefit from a procedure like an ossiculoplasty. The only way to determine the correct treatment route is to undergo diagnostic testing and identify the reasoning for your hearing loss.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Prior to your procedure, your doctor will run testing to ensure you are a candidate for an ossiculoplasty procedure. Next, they will provide you with information about the surgery, as well as instructions to follow in the days leading up to your procedure.

During the procedure, patients will be under local or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout. The surgeon will make a small incision to access the ossicular chain. Depending on the patient’s condition, the surgeon will use a transcanal approach or a postauricular approach. The surgeon will begin placing the prosthetic and adjust it to fit comfortably. The surgeon will then close the incision and the patient will be taken off the anesthesia.

Patients are typically expected to return for a follow-up appointment one week after the procedure to ensure it is healing correctly. The ossiculoplasty recovery process can take between 4-6 weeks. Patients need to keep the inner ear dry in the weeks following surgery. Patients will also be expected to not fly for six weeks as the air pressure can disturb the healing process.
