Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation

The eustachian tube balloon dilation procedure is a minimally invasive procedure to treat dysfunctional eustachian tubes. The eustachian tube connects the ear to the back of the nose. If these tubes lose function, it can cause patients to experience an array of symptoms including muffled hearing, drainage, otitis media, and in extreme cases, hearing loss.

About Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation

During this procedure, a surgeon will use a catheter to insert a small balloon through the nose to the eustachian tubes. The surgeon will then inflate the balloon to expand the eustachian tube and allow air to flow. Once the tubes have expanded, the balloon will be removed. This minimally invasive procedure has been found to significantly improve the symptoms of patients experiencing eustachian tube dysfunction.

When is this Procedures Necessary?

In many cases, patients suffering from blocked eustachian tubes can find relief from nasal sprays and antihistamine tablets. These conservative treatments can help patients reduce inflammation and congestion from home, without the need for clinical treatment. However, if patients try these treatments and do not find relief, they may be a candidate for this minimally invasive procedure. Patients may qualify for eustachian tube balloon dilation if:

  • You previously had ear tubes
  • You have recurring ear infections or ongoing drainage
  • You have tried conservative treatments

If you believe you could benefit from a eustachian tube balloon dilation procedure, you should consult your physician. They can help you make sure this is the right procedure for you.

    Preparing for Your Procedure

In most cases, this procedure is performed using a local anesthetic and numbing agents to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Some patients may require a surgical approach if they have a deviated septum or another anatomical irregularity. The procedure itself is very quick and painless, and patients can return home the same day. Your doctor will likely give you a nasal spray to use after the procedure to moisturize the nasal passages and to optimize comfort.

After the procedure, your doctor will likely schedule a follow-up appointment so they can see how the area is healing. They may also teach you simple exercises to relieve pressure within the eustachian tubes.
