Adenoidectomy with Nasal Turbinate Reduction Procedure

An adenoidectomy with nasal turbinate reduction is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the adenoid glands and reduction of the nasal turbinates to improve nasal airway function. This procedure is typically performed on children and may be necessary if an individual has recurring ear infections and difficulty with nasal breathing.

These procedures are often performed in conjunction with one another because the concerns typically go hand in hand. Many patients who experience recurring infections could benefit from both an adenoidectomy and turbinate reduction to improve the overall function of their ENT functions. The adenoid glands are located in the upper airway, near the nasal cavity. The nasal turbinates, however, are located in the actual nasal cavity. Many medical professionals and ENT specialists suggest this joint procedure as it can solve two problems at once and yield more effective results.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Swollen adenoids are not always a cause for surgery. Oftentimes, patients with enlarged adenoids do not experience any discomfort and do not require surgery. However, in the case a patient is in pain or notices difficulty breathing or swallowing, treatment may be necessary. If the patient does not find relief from nasal sprays or antibiotics, an adenoidectomy may be necessary. Nasal turbinate reduction is typically considered if nasal obstruction is leading to additional concerns.

Patients may consider this procedure if:

  • Enlarged adenoids are causing discomfort or functional problems
  • Nasal obstruction is causing congestion or other breathing disorders
  • Nasal spray or antibiotics are ineffective
  • The patient is recommended for both procedures

Preparing for Your Procedure

The patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure they are comfortable throughout. During the procedure, the surgeon will remove the adenoid glands through the patient’s mouth. A material will be placed to manage any excess bleeding. During nasal turbinate reduction, the surgeon will use a general or local anesthetic. They will access the nasal turbinates through the nose and will use one of several methods to shrink the turbinates. After the procedure, the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

The recovery process typically takes around two weeks before patients can return to physical activity. During this time, patients must relax, eat soft foods, and stay away from large amounts of people, as getting a cold or sickness could cause infection. If necessary, the doctor may provide pain medication to ensure the patient is comfortable throughout the recovery period.
