Bilateral Submucosal Resection of Turbinates Procedure
Bilateral submucosal turbinate resection is a surgical procedure to treat enlarged turbinates located in the nasal region. During this procedure, a surgeon will remove part of the inside of the turbinates. The goal of this procedure is to improve nasal breathing by opening the airways of both nasal passages.

When is this Procedure Necessary?
Bilateral submucosal turbinate resection addresses chronic nasal obstruction due to enlarged turbinates. The decision to proceed with this surgical intervention is based on the severity of the patient’s symptoms and their response to conservative treatments such as nasal steroid sprays or decongestants. This procedure may be medically necessary if the patient has persistent difficulty breathing through their nose, recurrent sinus infections, or obstructive sleep apnea that is not adequately managed with non-invasive therapies.
Preparing for Your Procedure
Patients will be given local or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. During the procedure, the turbinates are accessed through the nostrils. The surgeon will make a small incision at the base of the turbinate to access the interior. Next, they will remove excess tissue from the submucosal layer to reduce the size of the turbinates. Once the goal of the procedure is achieved, the surgeon will close any incisions and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from anesthesia.
Swelling within the nasal passages is common after the procedure, leading to difficulty breathing. Pain medication and nasal decongestants may be prescribed to alleviate these symptoms. Patients need to follow their physician’s post-operative care instructions diligently, which may include avoiding strenuous physical activity and abstaining from certain medications that could interfere with healing.
