Open Septorhinoplasty with Turbinate Reduction Procedure

Open septorhinoplasty and turbinate reduction are two ENT procedures that are commonly performed in conjunction. A septorhinoplasty can be used as a cosmetic and functional procedure, as it can help patients who struggle to breathe through both nostrils. Turbinate reduction involves reducing the size of the turbinates to improve airflow in the nasal passages. Patients often undergo these procedures together to solve two problems at once, to experience a singular recovery period instead of two, and to ensure the surgeon approaches the procedure as a whole.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Septorhinoplasty and nasal turbinate reduction are considered medically necessary when a patient experiences obstruction in the nasal airway due to structural deformities or abnormalities within the nose such as a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, chronic sinusitis, or nasal polyps. These conditions can cause significant breathing difficulties, recurrent sinus infections, sleep apnea, and an overall decrease in quality of life. Both procedures are typically recommended after conservative treatments like medication or allergy management have proven ineffective in achieving symptom relief.

What To Expect

Patients are under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. During an open approach, the surgeon will make excisions on the external part of the nose to access and reshape the nasal septum which divides the nostrils. Surgeons meticulously sculpt these components to correct breathing difficulties, deviated septums, and cosmetic concerns such as a crooked or misshapen nose. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are taken off the anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the nose and possibly the eyes. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage any discomfort. Nasal congestion is also common due to nasal packing or swelling, although this will improve as healing progresses. Patients are advised to rest with their heads elevated, avoid strenuous activity, and refrain from blowing their nose for a specified period.
