Septoplasty and Nasal Turbinate Reduction Procedure

Septoplasty and nasal turbinate reduction are two standard surgical procedures often performed in conjunction to improve nasal breathing. To completely understand the goals of this joint procedure, it is necessary to understand each procedure individually. A septoplasty involves straightening the nasal septum with the intention of improving breathing. Nasal turbinate reduction, however, is a surgical procedure that involves reducing the size of the nasal turbinate in order to improve airflow through the nasal passage. Together, these procedures are able to significantly improve a patient’s breathing and can drastically improve their overall quality of life.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider undergoing a septoplasty and nasal turbinate reduction procedure if they experience chronic nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, and recurring sinus infections. These symptoms may come as the result of a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates. A deviated septum refers to the misalignment of the cartilage and bone that separates the nostrils, whereas the turbinates are the bony structures that filter and warm the air that passes through the nose. When something is wrong with these structures, it can cause debilitating problems for patients. A septoplasty and nasal turbinate reduction procedure may become necessary if patients would benefit from both individual procedures, but a joint procedure makes more sense.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout this procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision inside the nose and carefully repositioning the septum to realign and straighten it. Next, the surgeon will place small radiofrequency probes into the nose to reduce the size of nasal turbinate. Once the surgery is complete, the patient will be removed from the anesthesia and can wake up.

Following the procedure, patients may experience pain in the nose. Doctors will typically prescribe pain medications to help them manage any discomfort. Additionally, patients may be expected to wear a splint to support healing. It is very important that patients closely follow all instructions, as it helps to ensure a successful recovery.
