Excise Soft Tissue Tumor Neck, Deep Procedure

Soft tissue tumors in the neck are relatively common but do require medical attention to ensure they are not cancerous. Excision soft tissue tumor in the neck is a surgical procedure to remove a tumor located deeper in the neck region. The choice to excise a neck tumor depends on the tumor’s location, size, and whether it is causing painful symptoms. While smaller tumors can be removed through minimally invasive procedures such as needle biopsy, larger masses may necessitate open surgical excisions.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

There are a few instances where a physician will recommend that patients have a soft tissue tumor in the neck excised. Firstly, it is indicated when the tumor causes pain or discomfort to the patient. This can include symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulties, or pressure on adjacent structures. Additionally, excision may be required if the tumor shows signs of malignancy or has grown substantially in size, raising concerns about its potential to invade surrounding tissues and spread.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision over the region of the deep tumor and will use sutures to extract the tissue. If the tumor is cancerous, the surgeon will ensure to remove all tissue surrounding the tumor as well. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

In the days following the procedure, patients may experience discomfort in the neck region, however, it is manageable through prescribed pain medications. If the patient receives a biopsy with this procedure, it typically takes 1-2 weeks to get results.
