Parotidectomy Procedure

A parotidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the parotid gland. The parotid glands are the largest of the salivary glands, and they are located right in front of the ears These glands play a crucial role in producing saliva and maintaining oral health. A parotidectomy may become necessary to treat a cancerous tumor. It can also help to prevent benign tumors from becoming malignant. This procedure is also sometimes considered if a patient has a tumor that is growing that could potentially damage a facial nerve.

This is a complex procedure that requires extensive experience. Throughout the procedure, the surgeon has to be careful to not harm any facial nerves or structures. Advanced techniques like nerve monitoring and facial nerve identification help facilitate successful outcomes by minimizing potential complications such as temporary or permanent facial weakness.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Tumors in the parotid glands are uncommon, but not completely rare. Both malignant and benign tumors can grow on these glands, and it is always important to get them checked by a specialist. If there is suspicion or confirmation of a tumor within the parotid gland, a parotidectomy may be required for both diagnostic and curative purposes. This includes benign tumors, which can cause facial pain and deformities if left untreated, as well as malignant tumors, which require immediate removal to prevent further spread.

Individuals experiencing recurrent infections or chronic inflammation of the salivary glands may also require a parotidectomy. Conditions like sialadenitis can lead to persistent pain and swelling that significantly impact quality of life. In cases where stones have formed within the ducts leading from the parotid gland into the mouth (parotid stones), a parotidectomy becomes necessary to alleviate symptoms including dry mouth and difficulty chewing.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision in front of the ear to access the parotid gland. Next, the surgeon will remove a portion of the entire parotid gland, depending on the extent of the tumor. When the goal of the surgery is achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

The recovery period involves several key aspects, including wound care, swelling management, and rehabilitation exercises. Patients are usually advised to keep the wound clean and dress it regularly to prevent infection. Swelling can be significant following surgery and may take several weeks to subside completely. Doctors often recommend applying cold compresses or using prescribed medications to minimize swelling. Rehabilitation exercises are crucial for restoring normal facial movement post-surgery.
