Submandibular gland excision, also known as submandibulectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove the submandibular salivary gland. This gland is located beneath the jawbone and it is responsible for the production of saliva and aiding in digestion. This procedure is recommended to patients if this gland becomes inflamed as a result of infection. If this condition goes untreated, puss can collect and cause loss of movement on that side of the face.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
This procedure is typically necessary when the submandibular glands become chronically infected or develop tumors. Chronic infections of the submandibular glands may result in recurrent swelling, pain, and difficulty swallowing due to blockage of saliva flow. Additionally, if a tumor develops within these glands, it may require excision to prevent further growth and potential malignancy.
Submandibular gland excision can also be indicated in cases where there is persistent enlargement or recurrent stone formation within the ducts leading to discomfort and complications. While conservative approaches such as medication or surveillance may be attempted initially for certain conditions, submandibular gland excision becomes necessary when symptoms persist or there is suspicion of malignancy.
Patients are under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision below the jaw, this will make the scar less visible. Next, the surgeon will find the salivary gland and detach the surrounding structure before removing the entire gland. Finally, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.
