A thyroidectomy procedure is the surgical removal of the thyroid gland. This procedure is most commonly performed on individuals who have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Although less common, there are other reasons why patients may undergo a thyroidectomy, including noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid, hyperthyroidism, or thyroid nodules.

The thyroid is located at the front of the neck, and it is responsible for producing hormones that control the body’s metabolism, growth, and development. Before this procedure, patients will undergo diagnostic testing including thyroid imaging (ultrasound or CT scan), as well as blood work. This procedure is most commonly performed by an endocrine surgeon, who is a surgeon that specializes in all the endocrine glands, including the thyroid gland.

 

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A thyroidectomy with neck dissection is considered medically necessary for patients who have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer where the tumor is large. Other reasons for a thyroidectomy include nodules on the thyroid gland and noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid gland. Although the only true way to identify a thyroid disorder is through blood tests, patients should visit a doctor if they experience significant weight change, muscle weakness, or drastic changes in emotions and behavior.

 

What To Expect

Depending on the reason for the thyroidectomy, the exact approach may vary. However, the following is a general description that can help you have an understanding of what you should expect before a thyroidectomy procedure. Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision at the lower neck to access the thyroid gland. They will then carefully remove either the partial or the entire thyroid, depending on the reason for surgery. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

Immediately after the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience discomfort at the incision site. Patients are typically given pain medications to manage any discomfort, as well as a hormone replacement medication to stabilize hormones.
