Procedure
The thyroid is located at the front of the neck, and it is responsible for producing hormones that control the body’s metabolism, growth, and development. Before this procedure, patients will undergo diagnostic testing including thyroid imaging (ultrasound or CT scan), as well as blood work. This procedure is most commonly performed by an endocrine surgeon, who is a surgeon that specializes in all the endocrine glands, including the thyroid gland.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
What To Expect
Immediately after the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience discomfort at the incision site. Patients are typically given pain medications to manage any discomfort, as well as a hormone replacement medication to stabilize hormones. This is a serious surgery, and patients must be properly educated on the symptoms they may experience and know when to visit their doctor.
