Inguinal Hernia Repair and Ventral Hernia Repair Procedure

Inguinal and ventral hernia repair is a surgical procedure to help patients who have both ventral and inguinal hernias. An inguinal hernia occurs when part of the intestine or other tissue pushes through the inguinal canal. A ventral hernia, also referred to as an abdominal hernia, occurs when an organ protrudes through the abdominal wall. Oftentimes, patients present symptoms of both types of hernias at once. This is a joint procedure that treats a ventral and inguinal hernia during the same surgical procedure.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider undergoing inguinal and ventral hernia repair if they have both types of hernias at the same times. Oftentimes, patients with these conditions notice that the hernias go away on their own or are asymptomatic. However, if the patient experiences any pain that does not go away, they may be a candidate for surgery.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision over the region to access the hernias. Typically, the surgeon can reach both through a singular incision. The procedure involves carefully moving the protruding tissue back into place and adding surgical mesh to prevent the hernias from recurring. Once the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they wake up from the anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients may experience discomfort in the region of the incision. This is manageable through a course of prescribed pain medications. It is important that patients practice proper wound care to prevent infection and promote healing. If patients experience any irregular symptoms, they should promptly consult their doctor to ensure a successful recovery.
