Abscess incision and drainage is a surgical procedure to treat an abscess, which is a localized infection or collection of puss within the body. The goal of this procedure is to relieve pressure from the site, prevent further infection, and allow the area to heal. There are a few reasons why an abscess would develop, but it is most commonly due to the growth of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or viruses. When the body senses this, it sends white blood cells to fight the infection; this results in swelling and build-up, known as an abscess.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Oftentimes, abscesses can be treated through the use of antibiotics. However, if conservative efforts are ineffective at providing relief, surgical intervention may be recommended. If left untreated, an infected abscess can spread to surrounding tissues and cause serious health concerns including pneumonia, inflammation in the heart, and brain abscess.

What To Expect

The surgeon will analyze the abscess and determine its size, location, and any potential concerns prior to the procedure. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout. The surgeon will begin making a small incision over the region of the abscess. They will then drain the pus from the abscess, relieving the pressure from the region. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will properly dress the wound to prevent infection.
