Anoscopy with dilation is a procedure used to examine the lining of the anal canal to treat and diagnose conditions like hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and some cancers. During this procedure, the surgeon will insert an anoscope into the anus to allow for clear visualization. If there is a narrowing of the anal canal, dilation may be performed using specialized instruments to widen the passage and make the procedure more comfortable.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

An anoscopy with dilation may be recommended to patients if they experience symptoms such as difficulty passing stool, rectal bleeding, anal pain, hemorrhoids, fissures, and others. This procedure allows the doctor to visualize the inside of the anal canal and rectum more thoroughly and can help to identify any abnormalities that may be causing the patient’s symptoms.

What To Expect

During this procedure, the doctor will insert the anoscope into the anus until it reaches the rectum. Oftentimes, the doctor will use a numbing gel to make the procedure more comfortable. The doctor will then examine the anal canal to observe abnormalities including hemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas, or polyps. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the doctor will carefully remove the anoscope. 

Mild discomfort and minor bleeding may be experienced immediately following the procedure, but these symptoms typically subside within a few days. Patients are advised to follow their healthcare provider’s instructions regarding post-procedure care, which may include avoiding strenuous activities, refraining from heavy lifting, and taking prescribed pain medication as needed.
