LINX Procedure (device not included) Procedure

The LINX procedure is a surgical intervention to treat patients who have been diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This disease occurs when stomach acid continuously flows from the stomach into the esophagus, also known as acid reflux. Patients may consider surgery if they experience frequent chest pain or heartburn. This procedure involves implanting a small, flexible bracelet of titanium beads around the lower region of the esophagus. This bracelet-shaped device prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

The LINX procedure may become medically necessary when conservative treatments like lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and medications fail to provide adequate symptom relief for patients suffering from severe or chronic acid reflux. Patients may be candidates for the LINX procedure if they exhibit persistent symptoms of GERD despite maximal medical therapy, complications such as Barrett’s esophagus or erosive esophagitis, and intolerance to long-term proton pump inhibitor therapy.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision in the abdominal region to access the esophagus. They will insert the LINX device, a ring of magnetic titanium beads connected by titanium wires. The LINX device is carefully placed around the lower esophagus, where it will remain indefinitely. Once in position, the surgeon will test the device’s functionality to ensure proper placement and function before closing up incisions.

The recovery process for this procedure typically involves a brief hospital stay and minimal downtime, with most patients being able to resume their normal activities within a few days. During the initial recovery period, patients may experience some discomfort or difficulty swallowing which can be managed with pain medication and a soft diet.
