Breast Reconstruction With Latissimus Flap Procedure

Breast reconstruction with latissimus flap is a surgical procedure to restore the shape and symmetry of a breast after a mastectomy. A mastectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the breast(s) to treat or prevent breast cancer. During breast reconstruction, the surgeon takes tissue from the latissimus dorsi muscle in the back and uses it to form a new breast shape. Surgeons will typically recommend this approach if the patient does not have enough tissue in their abdominal region.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Breast reconstruction with latissimus flap is a surgical procedure that is often performed on breast cancer patients who have had a mastectomy. A mastectomy is the removal of the breasts to treat or prevent cancer, and patients will often opt to undergo a breast reconstruction procedure after for cosmetic reasons. Typically, surgeons will use tissue from the abdominal region during breast reconstruction, but in cases where there is not enough, the surgeon will use tissue from the latissimus dorsi muscle located in the back.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision at the back of the shoulder blade and will take the material to reconstruct the breast. The flap’s blood vessels will remain attached to the original supply in the armpit. In certain cases, patients may also choose to have their nipples reconstructed and/or tattooed, which will make the breasts appear closer to their appearance before the mastectomy.

After the procedure, patients typically experience soreness and discomfort in the following days. Patients may have drainage tubes for a short period to reduce the fluid that has collected at the surgical site. Patients will wear an elastic bandage or a supportive bra to prevent swelling and provide extra support for the breasts while they heal. Scarring is normal after a procedure like this, but it will typically fade with time. Patients can normally return to normal activity within 6 weeks. Patients must consult their doctors if they experience any irregular symptoms.
