About Ankle Replacements

This procedure is typically a last resort for patients who have experienced prolonged arthritis, chronic ankle pain, or limited mobility in their ankles. Although this surgery is considered safe, there are some risks attached to it, as with any invasive surgery. Therefore, a patient will typically consider less invasive alternatives beforehand.

An ankle replacement is a great option for patients who experience debilitating pain from their ankle condition. If you are considering an ankle replacement, make sure to consider all alternatives to find the most effective, least invasive treatment option.

When is this Procedures Necessary?

Most patients with severe arthritis symptoms in the ankle can find relief through a minimally invasive procedure. However, in certain circumstances, an ankle replacement is necessary to provide lasting relief. A patient may be a candidate for ankle replacement surgery if:

  • They have severe arthritis
  • They have chronic, debilitating ankle pain
  • Pain medications and other conservative therapies were ineffective
  • They suffered a severe ankle injury

It is very important that patients consider all treatment options before committing to an invasive procedure. Although conservative methods may take longer, they are often very effective and can negate the need for intensive surgery.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Prior to your ankle procedure, you will undergo testing to ensure you are healthy and capable of undergoing an arthroplasty. After approval, your doctor will give you a list of instructions for the day of your procedure. Since an ankle replacement is performed under anesthesia, it is important to closely follow the instructions, especially any directions regarding fasting before surgery. Additionally, patients will need a designated driver to bring them home as they will not be able to drive after the procedure.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision and remove the damaged bone or cartilage from the site. The surgeon will then prepare the site for the artificial joint and carefully place it while ensuring to check for range of motion and other significant functions. The incision site will then be stitched up and the patient will wake up after the procedure.

After this surgery, patients will experience some discomfort and can take pain medication as directed by their surgeon. Some patients can walk again after four weeks, but it is imperative that patients take physical activity slowly and closely follow all directions. This is an invasive surgery and not following the recovery processes can yield an ineffective result.
