Brostrom Ligament Reconstruction Procedure

Brostrom ligament reconstruction is a surgical procedure to stabilize and strengthen the ankle joint, specifically targeting the lateral ligaments. This procedure is recommended for patients who suffer from recurring ankle sprains or have chronic ankle instability. During the procedure, the surgeon will detach and tighten the damaged ligaments to improve function and decrease swelling.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Brostrom ligament reconstruction is considered medically necessary for patients with chronic ankle instability caused by ligamentous laxity or repeated ankle sprains. This procedure is typically recommended when conservative treatments, such as physical therapy, bracing, and immobilization, have failed to provide sufficient symptom relief or improve joint stability. Candidates for Brostrom ligament repair often experience persistent pain, swelling, recurrent ankle sprains, and a sensation of the ankle giving way.

What To Expect

Patients are given anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision on the lateral side of the ankle, allowing the surgeon to access and visualize the damaged ligaments. Once identified, any scar tissue or debris is removed, and any tears in the ligaments are repaired by suturing them back together using strong sutures or anchors attached to bones for reinforcement. In some cases, if there is significant ligament damage, a tendon graft may be taken from another part of the body to reinforce and strengthen the repair. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients may experience pain at the site of the incision and will be given medication to manage their discomfort. After the surgery, patients typically undergo a specific recovery protocol to optimize healing and restore normal ankle function. The initial phase involves rest, elevation, and protected weight-bearing using crutches or a walking boot. Physical therapy sessions are then initiated to regain range of motion, strengthen the surrounding muscles, and improve stability.
