Ingrown Toenail (excision of Hallux matrix) Procedure
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Hallux matric excision may become necessary if:
- The patient experiences debilitating pain and struggles to walk as a result of the ingrown toenail.
- The patient has developed an infection.
- The toenail is deeply embedded in the skin.
What To Expect
The surgeon will use local anesthesia to ensure the patient is comfortable throughout the procedure process. Next, the surgeon will sterilize the area before beginning the procedure. The surgeon will remove both sides of the toenail, along with a portion of the root. This procedure is very straightforward and typically takes less than 20 minutes to complete.
After the procedure, patients may experience pain around the toe, which is manageable through pain medications provided by the doctor. Patients will be instructed on techniques to ensure the area stays clean to prevent infection. Patients are able to walk but should wear the recommended shoes and not engage in serious physical activity.
