Sesamoidectomy Procedure

A sesamoidectomy is a surgical procedure to repair an injury to a sesamoid bone. The sesamoid bones are the small bones located beneath the big toe joint. These bones help the big toe to move and push off the ground during motion. Doctors may recommend a sesamoidectomy procedure to patients who experience significant pain and dysfunction. Doctors initially recommend conservative therapies, and if these are ineffective, they may then recommend a sesamoidectomy.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

This procedure may be required due to various conditions such as a fracture, dislocation, chronic inflammation, or degeneration of the sesamoid bones. In severe cases where conservative treatments have failed to provide relief from pain and discomfort, a sesamoidectomy is considered a viable option for long-term resolution. A qualified healthcare professional must conduct a thorough examination and diagnostic imaging techniques to accurately diagnose the underlying issue and determine if surgery is warranted.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision on the inside of the foot to access the sesamoid bones and make the necessary surgical repairs. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

Following a successful surgery to remove the problematic sesamoid bones located in the foot, patients must take appropriate measures to manage pain, discomfort, and swelling. Initially, the affected foot will be immobilized with a cast or protective bandage for proper healing. Weight-bearing activities are prohibited during this initial phase, with crutches often recommended to assist mobility. Over time, as healing progresses and pain subsides, physical therapy exercises can be introduced to enhance strength, flexibility, and range of motion.
