ACL Repair Procedure

The anterior cruciate ligament, more commonly referred to as the ACL, is one of the ligaments in the knee. The ACL connects the femur to the tibia and is responsible for keeping the knee stable. Unfortunately, ACL conditions are fairly common and are often the result of sports-related injuries. Patients who suspect they have an injured ACL should promptly visit their doctor to undergo diagnostic testing, including X-rays and physical examinations.

Depending on the severity of the injury, surgery may be necessary. For partial ACL tears, many patients are able to find relief through conservative therapies including physical therapy. However, surgical intervention is always almost necessary for complete tears, where the ligament is almost completely nonfunctioning.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

There are various factors that patients must consider after sustaining an ACL injury. First of all, it is important to consider the severity of the injury – whether it is a partial or complete tear. This will heavily influence the urgency of surgery. Next, the patient will want to consider their personal goals and decide if they see surgery as a necessity. If the tear is partial or complete, and patients intend to return to an active lifestyle, surgery may be necessary, However, if the patient sustains a partial ACL tear but is older and is not particularly active, surgery may not be necessary.

The decision to undergo surgery is reliant on the severity of the tear, the patient’s functional goals, and the recommendation of the orthopedic surgeon.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision on the knee to access the damaged anterior cruciate ligament. The surgeon will remove the torn ACL and replace it with a segment of a tendon to connect the muscle to the bone. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

Upon completion of the surgical procedure, patients are typically advised to rest and elevate their leg to minimize swelling and discomfort. Physical therapy sessions start soon after, primarily focused on regaining the range of motion in the knee joint through gradual exercises. As weeks progress, strength training exercises are incorporated to improve muscle stability around the knee area. Patients are encouraged to actively participate in their recovery, engaging in regular home exercise routines as assigned by their therapist.
