Hamstring Repair (implants not included) Procedure

Hamstring repair is a surgical procedure that intends to repair a damaged or torn hamstring. The hamstring consists of three main muscles located at the back of the thigh. A hamstring injury can occur due to sudden injury or as a result of continuous strain or movement. A hamstring repair procedure may become necessary if conservative treatment methods are ineffective. During a hamstring repair procedure, the surgeon will reconstruct the hamstring tendons which will help to stabilize the knee and improve overall movement.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider hamstring repair surgery if conservative efforts do not provide sufficient relief for a damaged hamstring. Additionally, sometimes an injury is too severe for conservative therapies and may require immediate surgical intervention. Some individuals experience recurring hamstring strains and despite treatment, the injuries persist. In this case, patients may eventually consider surgical intervention if the injury is recurring.

What To Expect

A hamstring repair procedure can be performed arthroscopically or through an open incision. Depending on the approach, the exact nature of the procedure will vary. It is important to discuss the surgical approach with your surgeon before the day of the procedure. Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision at the back of the thigh to access the hamstring. First, the surgeon will carefully identify the sciatic nerve to ensure it is protected throughout the procedure. Next, the surgeon will reattach the torn tendons back onto the bone using suture anchors. When the goal of the procedure is achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

Patients will experience discomfort in the days following the procedure and will be given pain medications to manage any discomfort. Oftentimes, patients may wear a brace to ensure the protection of the operated-on leg. Physical therapy often follows the initial recovery to help patients build strength and regain movement. Patients are expected to follow a strict rehabilitation plan including crutches and lots of rest in the coming week. Patients need to take this period seriously as it can determine the success of their surgery.
