Medial and Lateral Meniscectomy Procedure

Medial and lateral meniscectomy is a surgical procedure to trim the outer and/or inner regions of the meniscus. This is performed on patients who have a damaged or torn meniscus that requires medical intervention. Before recommending surgery, doctors typically recommend that patients try to find relief through conservative therapies such as physical therapy, pain medication, and rest. However, if these methods do not provide meaningful pain relief, many patients will consider undergoing a medial or lateral meniscectomy.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Oftentimes, patients who injure or damage their meniscus do not require surgical intervention. Many patients can find relief through conservative, nonsurgical interventions. However, if patients damage or tear their meniscus and continue to be in pain after conservative measures, surgery may become an option. Additionally, if the injury prevents the individual from completing necessary everyday tasks, they may choose to undergo this procedure so they can get back on their feet.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision at the medial or lateral side of the knee to access the damaged region of the meniscus. The exact nature of this procedure can drastically vary depending on whether the surgeon is using an arthroscopic or open approach. Therefore, patients need to discuss the surgery in detail with their surgeon beforehand. The surgeon will then trim away any parts of the tear that could cause any discomfort. When the objective of the surgery has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision(s) and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia. After the surgery, patients are typically prescribed pain medications and may be instructed to use crutches initially to prevent weight-bearing on the affected knee. Physical therapy is an essential component of the recovery process, as it helps restore range of motion, strength, and stability. Initially, therapy may focus on gentle exercises and modalities such as ice and electrical stimulation. As healing progresses, more challenging exercises like balance training and progressive resistance training are introduced to improve functional abilities.
