Arthroplasty

A knee arthroplasty is a minimally invasive surgical alternative to a total joint replacement. This procedure requires a smaller incision compared to traditional surgery, offering many benefits including a shorter and less intense recovery period. During this procedure, your surgeon will replace the damaged knee joint with an artificial joint made of metal, plastic, or ceramic materials.

About Arthroplasty

Patients with severe arthritis or other degenerative conditions can greatly benefit from a knee arthroplasty. This procedure can offer patients a new chance to participate in the physical activities their chronic knee pain has withheld them from.

When is Arthroplasty Necessary?

An arthroplasty, like any surgical procedure, is typically a last resort for patients experiencing joint pain. Oftentimes, a specialist will initially recommend conservative treatments such as hot and cold therapy, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory pain medications. If patients still experience chronic joint pain after consecutive weeks of this treatment, they may be a candidate for an arthroplasty procedure. A patient may be recommended for a knee arthroplasty if:

  • Your joint pain has persisted despite conservative treatments
  • Your symptoms are quickly worsening
  • You have suffered a severe or traumatic knee injury

Oftentimes, surgery is a patient’s only option. If you have worked with a specialist for weeks or months and haven’t noticed any improvement in knee function, surgery may be your next option. Fortunately, invasive surgery is no longer your only option, and a knee arthroplasty is an excellent alternative to traditional knee replacement surgery which is more invasive and results in a longer recovery period.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Prior to your procedure, you will undergo testing to ensure you are healthy and capable of undergoing an arthroplasty. After approval, your doctor will give you a list of instructions for the day of your procedure. Since this procedure is performed under anesthesia, it is important to closely follow the instructions, especially any directions regarding fasting before surgery. Additionally, patients will need a designated driver to bring them home as they will not be able to drive after the procedure.

After the procedure has concluded, you will be given pain medications to manage discomfort. Many patients will also participate in physical therapy in the weeks following surgery to ensure a safe recovery.
