Procedure
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Hysteroscopy with ablation is considered medically necessary in cases where a patient suffers from abnormal uterine bleeding that has not responded to conservative treatments such as hormone therapy or medication. This procedure is commonly used to diagnose and treat conditions such as polyps, fibroids, or endometrial hyperplasia which may be causing the abnormal bleeding. By removing or destroying the abnormal tissue through ablation techniques during hysteroscopy, patients can experience significant improvement in their symptoms and quality of life.
What To Expect
Patients will typically be under local anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will insert a hysteroscope through the cervix into the uterus. This will allow the surgeon to monitor the area throughout the surgery. Next, the surgeon will perform an ablation using heat or cold (different tools can be used based on the patient’s goals). These tools are utilized to destroy the uterine lining, which is the cause of menstruation.
After the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience some discomfort, spotting, and cramping. If patients experience any severe pain and spotting, however, they must consult their doctor to ensure no issues need to be addressed.
