Bilateral Nipple Reconstruction Procedure

Bilateral nipple reconstruction is a procedure that involves reconstructing both nipples following a mastectomy or lumpectomy. This procedure is often recommended for individuals who have undergone treatment for breast cancer and wish to restore symmetry in their appearance. This procedure is typically performed approximately three months after undergoing a mastectomy. It is important for the breast to heal before deciding to undergo this procedure.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Bilateral nipple reconstruction procedures are often deemed medically necessary in cases where a patient has undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer or other medical conditions, resulting in the removal of both breasts. This type of procedure can offer significant physical and psychological benefits for these patients, helping to restore their body image, self-esteem, and overall quality of life. Additionally, bilateral reconstruction may be recommended when asymmetry between the breasts is present after a unilateral mastectomy, leading to functional issues such as back and neck pain due to uneven weight distribution.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgery may vary depending on the approach agreed upon by the surgeon and patient. The surgeon will make an incision and then manipulate the skin to take the form of a nipple. In some cases, patients decide also to undergo a medical tattoo procedure to darken the area and have it better resemble a nipple. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

Following the procedure, patients are typically advised to follow strict post-operative instructions provided by their healthcare team, which may involve wearing compression garments, managing pain and swelling with prescribed medication, and attending regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress. Physical therapy exercises may also be recommended to help improve the range of motion and promote healing.
