Gynecomastia Procedure

A gynecomastia procedure, also known as a male breast reduction, is a surgical procedure to reduce breast volume. Gynecomastia is the medical term for the condition in which biological males overdevelop breast tissue. This condition can develop for a few reasons, but it is most commonly due to hormonal changes, some cancers, drug use, or an overactive thyroid. Typically, patients with gynecomastia do not require medical treatment and the breasts usually flatten over time. However, some patients consider surgery if diagnostic testing reveals a concern for breast carcinoma or if the condition does not resolve on its own over time.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A gynecomastia surgery becomes medically necessary when male breast enlargement becomes persistent and causes physical or psychological distress. Initial treatment for gynecomastia typically consists of hormone medications to prevent to growth of the breasts. However, if the reason for treatment is due to the possibility of carcinoma or if conservative treatments are ineffective, surgical intervention may become necessary.

Patients may develop gynecomastia for the following reasons:

  • Weight gain
  • Hormonal changes
  • Excessive alcohol consumption and drug use
  • Cancer

What To Expect

Prior to the procedure, patients will join their surgeon for a detailed consultation to establish a realistic goal and go over what to expect. On the day of surgery, patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the surgeon and patient’s needs, the surgeon will make an incision on an inconspicuous location of the breast. Oftentimes, the incision is made on the areola. The surgeon will then remove excess breast tissue and localized fat deposits. When the goal of the surgery has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia. The procedure typically takes between one to two hours.

Following the procedure, patients can expect temporary swelling, bruising, and discomfort that can be minimized through prescribed pain medication. It is crucial for individuals to follow post-operative instructions diligently and refrain from strenuous activities during recovery to ensure optimal healing.
