About Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Artificial Disc Placement

A pinched nerve is a degenerative condition that develops when there is too much pressure on a nerve from the surrounding tissue. During this procedure, the surgeon will remove the damaged disc and insert a spacer bone graft. This will be fixed to the vertebrae using a metal plate and screws. Depending on the severity of the condition, this procedure can be completed on different levels.

This procedure eliminates neck pain by relieving the pressure placed on the spinal nerves. Many patients can manage their pain through a course of conservative therapies including pain medications and physical therapy. However, the only true way to treat a degenerative spine is through surgery. Depending on a patient’s health and condition, their surgeon can make an informed treatment recommendation.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

A cervical discectomy fusion is suggested when a herniated disc pinches a nerve in the cervical spine. In addition to discomfort, this condition can manifest symptoms in the hand or arm. If patients are not able to manage their pain through conservative methods, they may begin to consider surgery.

Patients may consider this procedure if:

  • They have a herniated or degenerative disc
  • They experience arm or hand weakness
  • Conservative treatments are ineffective

Preparing for Your Procedure

Patients will be under general anesthesia during an anterior cervical discectomy to ensure their comfort. During this procedure, the surgeon will make an incision at the front of the neck to access the degenerated disc. This approach minimizes the risk that the spinal cord be affected throughout the procedure. The surgeon will then remove the damaged disc, opening up space in the spinal canal. A spacer graft will be inserted to fill the space and discourage the discs from collapsing. The surgeon will then connect the two vertebrae using a metal plate and screws. Over time, the body will naturally form new bone cells around the graft.

Patients must ensure they follow all instructions provided by the surgeon. This will be necessary for a successful recovery. During the recovery period, patients will be given pain medications to manage discomfort. Activities that require significant motion should be avoided until the site has healed. Oftentimes, patients report a full recovery between four and six weeks.
