Dupuytrens Contracture Procedure

Dupuytren’s Contracture is a condition that causes the fingers to bend towards the arm. In some cases, surgery is necessary to properly treat this condition. During this procedure, the surgeon will remove the thickened tissue that is responsible for bending the finger.

Patients may consider this procedure if they struggle to straighten their hands as a result of Dupuytren’s Contracture. If left untreated, this condition can result in severe deformities that may be more difficult to treat. If you are experiencing difficulty straightening your fingers and it has become debilitating, you should consult your doctor.

When Is This Procedure Necessary

Surgery for Dupuytren’s Contracture may become necessary if the patient begins to experience extreme pain in the hand when trying to complete basic functions. This procedure is typically performed on the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint if the contracture is 30° or greater. Depending on the patient’s symptoms and discomfort, the doctor will be able to make an informed recommendation.

Patients may consider this procedure if:

  • They are unable to straighten their hand
  • It is difficult to perform everyday tasks and activities
  • They experience pain as a result of this condition

Preparing for Your Procedure

During this surgical procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the hand and remove the thickened tissue. This will improve the mobility of the fingers. Depending on the severity of the patient’s condition and the success of the procedure, the recovery time may vary. However, most patients can return to normal activity after a few weeks, with full recovery taking a few months.
