Interstim Battery Change (implant not included) Procedure

InterStim is a medical device that helps patients who struggle to control their bowel and bladder. This device uses an implanted battery that delivers mild electrical pulses to the sacral nerves to improve communication with the brain. With this device, patients can manage their bladder more effectively, and can help them live a normal, more comfortable life.

InterStim batteries typically need replacement between 3-5 years after initial implantation. This is a simple procedure that generally takes less than an hour. During battery replacement, the surgeon will make an incision near the lower back to remove the old battery and replace it with a new one.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Medical professionals may recommend that patients consider an InterStim trial if they have an overactive bladder or bowels and their symptoms do not improve after conservative therapies. Oftentimes, doctors will initially encourage patients to consider lifestyle changes or specific therapies such as bladder training and pelvic floor exercises. Sometimes, medications can also help patients increase urine retention. If these conservative therapies are ineffective, the doctor may recommend that the patient consider an InterStim trial.

What To Expect

Patients are typically under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. This procedure includes connecting “leads” or wires of the InterStim device to the sacral nerves. The small InterStim battery is implanted in the patient’s lower back near the sacral nerves. The doctor will carefully detach and remove the old battery and will replace it with a new one.

After the procedure, patients may experience some discomfort and swelling in the region of the incision. Oftentimes, doctors will prescribe pain medications for this short period where pain might be present. Patients should communicate with their doctor if the new battery does not provide the same relief as the old one.
