Abdominoplasty Procedure

An abdominoplasty, sometimes referred to as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen to tighten the abdominal wall. Patients often choose to undergo this procedure after significant weight loss, pregnancy, or aging, which can lead to sagging skin. This procedure aims to tighten the abdominal region and help patients achieve their goals in terms of appearance.

Many patients seeking an abdominoplasty are not able to have it covered by their insurance. In this case, patients may consider an abdominoplasty with a Direct Specialty Care (DSC) provider. Smith Medical offers affordable plastic surgery to patients seeking transparent, quality care.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider undergoing an abdominoplasty if they have excess fat and skin in the abdominal region that has not responded to diet or exercise. Oftentimes, patients will consider this procedure after weight loss, pregnancy, or just from the effects of aging. Regardless of the reason, we strongly believe that all patients deserve to feel comfortable and confident in their skin. Smith Medical offers an affordable alternative to traditional, insurance-based breast reduction surgery.

What To Expect

Patients will meet with their surgeon before the procedure to ensure they have all the information they need and to discuss the details of the procedure. Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision along the lower abdomen before removing excess tissue. The surgeon will then reshape the region and reposition the belly button. Once the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they wake up from the anesthesia.

Immediately after surgery, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with pain medications prescribed by their surgeon. Patients need to follow post-operative care instructions carefully, including wearing compression garments, avoiding strenuous activities, and attending follow-up appointments with their surgeon. As the body heals, patients will gradually see improvements in their abdominal contour. Full recovery can take up to six months or longer, and patients should update their surgeon on their progress during follow-up appointments.
