Repair Ulnar Collateral Ligament of the Wrist (Implant Not Included, If Necessary) Procedure
Ulnar collateral nerve ligament repair, also known as UCL reconstruction, is a surgical procedure to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament. This procedure involves replacing the damaged or torn UCL with either a tendon graft from another part of the patient’s body or using a tissue graft from a deceased donor. Most of the time, candidates for this procedure tore their UCL as the result of a traumatic injury, often sports-related. The goal of UCL repair is to restore stability and strength to the elbow.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
A doctor may recommend ulnar collateral ligament repair surgery if the patient experiences significant damage to the UCL. This procedure is most commonly indicated for those who have sustained a complete or partial tear that significantly affects their daily activities, athletic performance, or causes chronic instability. Generally, conservative treatments including physical therapy and non-surgical interventions are initially employed to relieve symptoms and promote healing. However, if these methods fail to yield satisfactory results or if the degree of injury warrants immediate intervention, UCL repair surgery may be recommended.
What To Expect
Prior to the procedure, patients will undergo diagnostic imaging so the doctor can confirm a diagnosis. On the day of the procedure, patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the surgery. During the operation, the doctor will make small incisions to access the UCL and repair it using a variety of techniques such as sutures or grafts taken from other tendons in the patient’s body. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incisions and the patient will wake up.
Following surgery, patients undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation program that includes physical therapy exercises and stretches focused on restoring strength and range of motion.
